- a Luang Pu Kalong Story
Wizardry, folk-lore, and necromancy white magic used for good purpose is affiliated to Reusi in this story. A Ruesi or Lersi (depending on how you spell it) is one who practices mind development in various aspects to a very high Jhanic degree. Even our Lord Buddha had received teachings from Ruesi during his lifetime after renouncing his princely status. However, Siddharta Gotama left this schooling philosophy of Ruesi because it will only lead him to attain a higher state in the heavenly realm - a favorable rebirth that leaves one reborn as Devas or Brahmas with a very long lifespan. Subsequently, Siddharta Gotama found the middle path that leads Him to be a fully Enlightenment Buddha.

Reusi are known to be great alchemists and they’re able to extend their lifespan more than a thousand years. Pu Ser Serming Prai (of Luang Phor Krut) is no exception in this occult tradition. Most traditional Reusi highly venerate the higher Celestial Beings in the Veda tradition namely Lord Vishnu, Lord Shiva, Lord Brahma, and Hanuman, etc. Hence, it is not a co-incident that Luang Pu Kalong’s amulets are mostly associated with beings from the Celestial realms.
The word Reusi is associated with the thought of a secretive, mysterious hermit-like person who lives a solitary existence and dwells in a cave, the forest or deep inside the mountains. In Thailand the meaning of Ruesi is one with special abilities to see things that normal humans cannot perceive such as vision of the three time spheres (past, present and future).
To put it into perspective, for someone to achieve hermit status, one needs to submerge themselves in true isolation with little or no contact with the outside world. They are the ones seeking spiritual experience and wanted to touch heaven without any disturbances from society noises. Other religions, for example, Hinduism, Christianity, Islam (Sufism), and Taoism, also have hermits in the sense of individuals living an ascetic form of life.
Reusi Serming Prai
The legend of Pu Ser (Tiger Hermit) was related by Luang Pu Kalong a long time ago. Luang Pu Kalong said that when he was younger he liked to go into seclusion in the jungle and mountain in order to practice meditation as a Buddhist monk. This is for the benefit and welfare of Buddhism.
One day, he went to spend his rain retreat at Wat Dao Dueng in Singburi Province. At that time, this temple was badly dilapidated. During the first night of Luang Pu Kalong’s stay there, a strange incident happened. There was a strong wind blowing with ghostly screams being heard.
On the second night during meditation, there was a strong rotting smell and also a mass of big black ants. There were about thousands of these small crawling ants surrounding the resting area of Luang Pu Kalong. Despite all these frightening incidents, Luang Pu Kalong was able to deal with them using monk discipline, mind concentration and wisdom.
On the third watch of the night, there were thumbing footsteps of a giant as huge as a tree walking around. By using Wicha magic Luang Pu Kalong was able to triumph over this obstacle to face a huge black shadow which appeared in the place where LP was sitting and chanting.
When Luang Pu Kalong opened his eyes, he saw an old man with a fierce looking face, who was over a few hundred years old. The old man’s face gradually changed into the face of a ferocious tiger. For this reason, the B.E.2550 batch Reusi Loop Lor figurine was made into two versions to symbolize this human face and a tiger face.
This tiger faced in a human body (Pu Ser) asked Luang Pu Kalong, "Venerable Sir, who are you and where did you come from?"
In reply to Pu Ser, Luang Pu Kalong said "I am Kalong. I came here for seclusion to practice meditation according to the teachings of the Buddha."
Pu Ser then revealed to Luang Pu Kalong about the incidents which happened during the last 2 nights was caused by him. Therefore, we can conclude that a fully developed Ruesi with necromancy magic power can do miraculous things.
The story continued where Pu Ser initially thought that Luang Pu Kalong was trying to challenge him. Pu Ser using his psychic analysis then told Luang Pu Kalong "In my previous life, I was ordained at the time of the 2nd King of Ayuttaya, about 500 years ago. My name is Luang Phor Krut and we have practiced together before."
Pu Ser further said "In my previous life, I practiced the occult art of Ser Serming until I was very skillful. My body transformed from a monk into a Tiger-head Lersi because of Ser Serming's spell. This remained so until I passed away. After my death, I became Reusi Pu Ser and continued to practice until this day."
In order to prove that he was speaking the truth, Pu Ser brought Luang Pu Kalong to a secret treasure chest hidden under a large rubber tree. There were two 9 inches golden Buddha images inside that treasure chest. It was to proof that in their previous lives, Luang Pu Kalong and Luang Phor Krut made them together as an offering to the propagation of Buddhism. After witnessing and convinced about the gold Buddha images, Luang Pu Kalong placed it back into the hidden spot. After that, this news went viral throughout the village and made the villagers went looking for the gold Buddha images but nobody is able to find it.
Ser Serming spells is so powerful when invoked and practiced it could lead the practitioner to a world of necromancy knowledge and transforming oneself and be imparted with the Tiger spirit. Hence, we believe Luang Phor Krut is one of the legendary Reusi Serming Prai worshipped in Thailand today.
The Early Years at Wat Kao Leam
In BE2513 (1970), Luang Pu Kalong built Wat Kao Leam in Sakaew Province just nest to Prachin Buri Province. Many of us may have not heard about Luang Pu Kalong until his amulets are being taken seriously from B.E.2547 onward by the public. It is not strange because in Thailand there’re many “hidden” monks with great Wicha knowledge.
One day during meditation in the 70’s, Pu Ser once again manifested in the mind presence "nimitta" of Luang Pu Kalong. Pu Ser conveyed a message that he also wanted to practice meditation at Wat Kao Leam. With Pu Ser’s presence at the temple, Luang Pu Kalong have an old companion from his past life.
At that time Luang Pu Kalong was half-way building the ordination hall and is lacking funds to build a shrine for Pu Ser. There was a villager who overheard the news about a Tiger hermit and he wanted to try some luck. This villager made a wish to strike lottery and it happened that he won a 6-figure lottery prize money. He utilized a portion of the money to build a shrine for Pu Ser.
This shrine dedicated to Pu Ser was erected under the Makkha tree in front of Luang Pu Kalong's Kuti and it remained there until today.
Readers can read the rest of Wat Kao Leam’s story from previous SimplyBuy’s article The Alchemy of Celestial Universe Amulets about Luang Pu Kalong’s alchemy marvels in consecrating Celestial amulets.
Entering The World of Wizardry
We can generalize Reusi into 4 main classes that represent differing qualities (see below). They are further divided into another 8 sub-divisions. These variants of classes will give us an idea about their necromancy level or special abilities.
Ruesi's necromancy and spiritual path is based on Celestial universe knowledge which requires strict rules and dedication in this recluse schooling philosophy. Lord Shiva is an important mentor for all aspiring Ruesi.
Variant Classes of Ruesi
Source reference from www.lersi.net and random Internet resources.
Based on Internet research study on this subject matter, Ruesi can be classified into 4 classes for easy reference and understanding. The common understanding by most people is the belief there are 108 Ruesi in total in this entire universe. This is not exactly true because in Thai culture, the number 108 is auspicious and is collectively used to indicate plenty (more than 108). Therefore, you may have heard of names like Ruesi Tafai, Ruesi Mokkala, Ruesi Serming Prai, Ruesi Kobutra, etc. But it would be much easier to learn about Ruesi by understanding their classification types and 8 attainments or characteristics that has differing supernatural powers.
1) RATCHA RUESI
This is the entry level category and don’t possess any special power as they are beginning to practice the occult laws of Ruesi in the attempt to open up their Jhanic mind.
2) BRAHMA RUESI
This class of Ruesi may be able to attain rebirth in the Brahma realm and becoming a Celestial being.
3) TAEWO RUESI
This Ruesi class have guarded their vows or and thus have attained enough merits to possess supernatural abilities. This class has incredible strong Abinna supernatural powers.
4) MAHA RUESI
Apart from having attained Abinna supernatural powers, this class of Ruesi has incredible intelligence and also have extremely powerful magic spells and special abilities.
We strongly believe that Ruesi Poo Singh Serming Prai (Luang Phor Krut) fall in between the Taewo and Maha class. This is based on the assumption that Ruesi Poo Singh met the characteristics of the 2 classes mentioned in this text. We highly venerate the achievement of Poo Singh for his spiritual achievement and dedication in this occult science for the benefit of the universe.
The Ruesi's tradition originated from India and it's strongly being influenced by the Vedas which is the earliest Hindu sacred writings about hymns, prayers, and ritualistic formulas. Its spiritual path to attain mind and body purification is often associated with sacred sciences and superhuman abilities.
In today's modern age we can still find practicing Ruesi in Thailand following this age-old magic art of Necromancy tradition. But today's Ruesi are more of a tattoo Sakyant master, healer or fortune telling as compared to past generations. Just to name a few present age Ruesi here for example Ruesi Sompit, Ruesi Payakaraj, Ruesi Iswa, and many more. However, there's no doubt there could be some very adamant Ruesi practitioners today with full traditional tiger skin costume and a top knot hat still practicing in far remote places keeping very little contact with civilization.
It must also be made known too that some Buddhist monks also have learned under the tutelage of Ruesi either through 'nimitta' communication channel or from a living Ruesi. Prominent monks with such abilities or known to have created effective Ruesi's amulets other than Luang Phor Kalong such as Luang Phor Promma from Wat HinPhanangkhawy in Ubon Ratchathani Province, Luang Phor Nong from Wat Wang Si Thong in Sakaew Province and many others not mentioned here are good examples.
Ruesi spirits in the forest are very mysterious and they're invincible to the human eyes. Some of these Ruesi may have lived several hundred years or more. They can take up any form or appearance as they wish. In retrospect, they do not have a physical human body anymore because they've surpassed the ordinary human lifespan as they've reached a higher realm while practicing the necromancy art of Ruesi. In many stories from Acharn Mun's biography, Ruesi have manifested into fearsome tiger just to test the Dhutanga Bhikkus about fear and death.
We have earlier explained the 4 different classes of Reusi. The remaining part here shall explain our understanding about the 8 sub-divisions on Reusi's characteristics that falls under one of the 4 classes. The respective sub-divisions based on Ruesi's achievement are;
Pra Sita
Meaning a Ruesi who has special qualities of goodness and ethical values. Such a Ruesi will abide in mountain ranges, and caves that may be found therein, this place between the sun and the earth (mountains) is where he finds it comfortable to live.
Pra Yoki
Meaning “he who is in completion”, or a practitioner of “Sangyoke” (Yoga). This kind of Ruesi will wander in the forest or mountains leading a solitary existence refusing all comforts and putting himself/herself through various trials and sufferings in order to attain a higher consciousness.
Pra Munee
Meaning “one of the Brahmin group (in the Vedas) who is maintaining extreme effort to acheive spiritual/magical accomplishments. Pra Munee Reusis will achieve a high level of intellect, knowledge and abilities through their diligent study and practice. This Ruesi is of the intellectual class.
Pra Daabod (Dabasa)
Meaning “he who practices self-control and actions to accomplish great merit”. This type of Reusi maintains effort to cut the cords of selfishness and attachment (Kilesa) through self-renunciation of pleasures while undergoing physical and mental hardships (self-torture) in order to enter the world of bliss that is the result of meritorious action through self-denial and renunciation of worldly pleasures.
Chadin (Chadila)
Meaning a Ruesi who likes to wind his hair up in a mound on top of his head (like the “babas” you can observe in India to this day). Their beards and moustaches are unruly, uncombed and rather uncared for. These Ruesi do not like a clean and orderly lifestyle. They wander around in the forests and outback. They are considered to be Brahmins.
Nak Sit
Meaning a half Angelic (Divine) and half human being. Nak Sit has “Sila” (spiritual vows/vocational behaviour). These beings love truthful speech that leads to true understanding and knowledge. They have a deeply ingrained feeling for justice and righteousness, and like to lend help to people who have fallen into great hardship and suffering. They reside in open, pure and empty places, ranging from the sun and space right down to the human realms on this planet. There are many hundreds of thousands of these beings roaming around the heavens looking for entry points to come down to earth and help the Humans in distress (Bodhisattvas like beings).
Nak Prot
Meaning a Ruesi who keeps his vows of renunciation and “Sila” with great perseverance. Never allowing himself to slip in his promise to uphold his sacred vows to the purest form. These Reusi beings like to reside in mountainous caves, forests and places where magic herbs grow. They never let people see them and remain hidden from the eyes of humans.
Phram or Brahmin
Literally it means “Brahmin” where Brahmin in the Vedas has a lot of similarity with Ruesi. This sub-division Reusi believes in the necessity to go out and lend aid to Beings in distress and in need of help. This is central part of their practice. Brahmins tend to reside and meet in groups in the vicinity of Divine and sacred places. When someone asks for a Brahmin to come and help to initiate a ceremony, whether it be a Ceremony for the Ruesi, or Angelic beings or other Divinities, the Brahmin will come and set up the Ceremony at no cost or need of repayment in any manner. This in the present day is unfortunately not true anymore because the noble tradition has been destroyed by the modern society which has made it impossible to exist without the transfer of money.
In brief, Brahmins love to help other beings in any way and when not in the service of living beings, they return to their practice of renunciation pleasures and keeping of their vows in renunciation and purity (Sila).
Above all, a Ruesi who could manage to incorporate all the 8 sub-divisions of special qualities mentioned here, is then considered to be a “Samrej” (completely developed). Such a Ruesi would already have revoked all selfishness and has freed himself from all worldly attachments.
This kind of Ruesi will see the nature of reality with his eyes closed, he will have complete “Sila” (ascetic vows), know what actions are meritorious and what actions that causes negative effects. He understands the laws of Karma completely and use his wisdom to act wisely. Therefore, this Reusi developed no negative cause and effect in his future existence. This eight-fold path Ruesi would have passed the Sodaban level of consciousness, possess divine mind, eyes and ears. This is the meaning of “Samrej”.
Upon death a Samrej Ruesi will be reborn in the “Prahm” (Brahmic) Heaven (in the west we refer to this as Seventh Heaven. This phrase is originated from the Hindus Veda and Buddhist texts, as this is the seventh plane of Celestial existence. In this plane of existence, there is no suffering and the Celestial beings here partake of pleasures with peaceful existence. But this is not the end of the journey for this completely developed Samrej Reusi. This Reusi will continue his/her spiritual and mental development to higher levels beyond the realms of our imaginations.
In some ways the training approach taken by Ruesi is similar to the Dhutanga monks. Dhutanga is an ascetic discipline where monks go deep into the forest, caves, hanging cliffs, to train the citta (mind). Choosing these recluse hermitage to train their meditation skills until their citta does not display any fear of tigers or ghosts to reach a higher level of Jhanic achievements which naturally comes with Abinna higher knowledge.
Ruesi’s dwelling places is no different from the time of the Lord Buddha, for the Savakas preferred to live in whatever manner suited their natural inclinations in these settings. Some preferred to live in the forests and hills, so they stayed in such places for the remainder of their lives; for example, Venerable Annakondanna who only came out of the forests and hills when he was near to the time of his death (Nibbana) and went to see the Lord Buddha to pay his last respects before finally entering Nibbana.
At first, none of the younger Bhikkus or Samaneras in the place where the Lord was staying had ever seen him before, wearing his robes dyed with red earth, there being no dark brown or yellow dye from the jack fruit tree available in the deep forests and jungles. So they were uncertain about him (Annakondanna), thinking that he was an old wandering monk, - “and where did he get those robes from?” So they went to see the Lord Buddha and in accordance with their thoughts they said: “Lord, please forgive us for troubling you, but we wish to know where this old wandering monk has come from with robes of such a frightful colour. They are red, as if they had been dyed in blood, or what else we don’t know?”
The Lord saw the wrong attitude of these young Bhikkus and Samaneras who had such doubts that they did not respect this Maha Thera so he spoke to them immediately, saying “This is Venerable Annakondanna, the elder brother of all of you and the first of the Savakas of the Tathagata to reach Dhamma. You must remember your elder brother and keep this in mind from now on, for Venerable Annakondanna has been an Arahant since the beginning of the Sasana of the Tathagata. He has always behaved and practiced in the right manner (samici kamma), habitually living in the forest and hills and having no liking for the involvement and turbulence of crowds of people.
But now his body is old and beyond the point where it can be cured with medicines so he left the forest to come and see the Tathagata and to pay his last respects, for being long he will enter Nibbana. It is rare to find any of the ‘sons’ of the Tathagata who have an inherent liking for living in the forests and hills such as Venerable Annakondanna has. So all of you should remember well that the Bhikkhu who has just left the Tathagata is Venerable Annakondanna, the first and eldest of the sons of the Tathagata and the most senior of all of you – and not the old wandering monk as all of you thought.”

The forest or the most secluded dwelling places on earth are the best geographic location for Ruesi to practice their meditative skills thus gaining psychic powers, supernatural knowledge, alchemy, spells. However, the objective of a Dhutanga monk is centered onto Samadhi, Panna and Nibbana.
According to the Ven. Acharn Maha Boowa in the book ‘The Mode of Practice of Ven. Acharn Mun Bhuridatta Thera’ those Bhikkhus who liked living in desolate forests often had many unusual experiences and things which happened, such as were associated with ghosts, Devata, Indra, Brahma, Nagas, tigers and other animals. On occasions they were also visited by the Savaka Arahants who came to give some teaching.
The Himapan realm and other heavenly planes of existence are real and could only be communicated at the appropriate meditative mind or Jhana absorption level by the individual themselves either as monk or a Ruesi. This book has been a very interesting source of inspiration to get a feel of the ascetic practices which you can easily download a softcopy from the Internet.
A comprehensive practice of the Ruesi is the mastery of Jeta Bhumi or astral world, and Prana Yama focus of the breath. This is deemed very important and powerful practice and training in a Ruesi's spiritual development in order to acquire inner spiritual knowledge and supernatural mastery.
Jeta Bhumi in this context is referred as the subtle astral body which resides within the physical body. This astral body is not visible with the naked eyes. For a moment let's try to give an analogy when a person enters a bad dream and may quickly awaken with a pounding heartbeat and heavy respiration. The body may feel very heavy like dropped from the sky and need a while to adjust back all the senses. In other words this Astral body flees very quickly back to the physical body when being confronted in a situation it did not like during astral travel (dreams).
For Ruesi it is possible to Astral Travel throughout space and time into some other realms of existence. But certain Celestial realms can not be accessed unless the Ruesi's spiritual attainment has the qualities needed to gain access to that particular Celestial realm. This Ruesi practice will also gain all the 6 types of Abhinya supernatural psychic powers like the Buddha.
The six types of higher knowledge (Abhiññā) are:
"Higher powers" (iddhi-vidhā) such as walking on water and through walls
"Divine ear" (dibba-sota), that can listen to voices from the universe system
"Mind-penetrating knowledge" (ceto-pariya-ñāṇa), that is mind telepathy
"Remember one's former abodes" (pubbe-nivāsanussati), remembering ones own past lives
"Divine eye" (dibba-cakkhu), knowing others' karmic destinations, etc.
"Extinction of mental intoxicants" (āsavakkhaya), upon which Arahantship follows
The first five powers are obtained through meditative concentration (samadhi) while the sixth is obtained through insight (vipassana). The sixth type is the ultimate goal in Buddhism which is the end of suffering, rebirth and the destruction of all ignorance.
Ruesi follows the life path in helping to reduce sufferings of beings in all the universe they can reach. Earlier we have explained the different classes of Ruesi based on their psychic achievement. It is said that a Ruesi can only remember up to a limit of eighty past lives, whereas the Buddha could remember countless past lives in the ocean of enormous sufferings.
According to the Buddha, indulgence in the Abhinna needs to be avoided as they can distract from the ultimate goal of Enlightenment. Ruesi's on the other hand would practice this astral travel to the various Celestial realms including the underworlds to learn about the universe. This is part of their central learning to increase their Wicha magic knowledge and Parami.
Prana Yama is the exercise of maintaining one-pointed attention of the breath as it enters and leaves the body. Purity of mind arises with this breath concentration training. This state of purity comes with very strong Prana energy that can invoked power into making Katha incantation, holy water, blessings to a person or making spells on a material object e.g. amulets. This Prana energy when attained can also be channeled to heal illnesses and wounds of other living beings in this universe.
This one-pointed purification of the mind training is samadhi meditation. This method could eradicate anger, sexual desires, and all other impurities of the mind. With proper practice, the yogis, Ruesi or monks can attain all the five Abhiññā higher knowledge mentioned earlier.
Ruesi are able to extend their lifespan to more than a thousand years. This is highly possible because the 'citta' or mind doesn't die. The physical body would decay and die but not the mind. In the aspect of Ruesi's training, it is understood that the physical body has a limited lifespan subjected to birth, old age, sickness and death. In all essence when the body dies, it is impossible for the practicing Ruesi to find another corporeal body that can withstand the test of time or doesn't decay nor die.
In the case of Luang Phor Krut (a friend of Luang Pu Kalong in past life during Ayutthaya's era) the occult practice of Ser Serming spells made him live beyond that of his physical body. Without his physical body, the only channel of communication is through 'nimitta' during a state of calm in meditation.
People would generally seek Ruesi to have a bit of luck to strike 4D lottery, healing, dispelling black magic, and resolve trivial matters. Usually betel nuts with rolled betel leaves, cigarettes, and flowers are offered as prayers. It's quite interesting to see or experience how people venerate Ruesi at temples where the smokes from lighted joss sticks and cigarettes can be bewildering. That shows people are connected with this Ruesi mythology and have high respect for their supernatural power. But for me, the main priority to seek Ruesi Serming Prai's assistance is for guidance toward smooth progress in my meditation journey.
We are unsure about Luang Pu Kalong's affiliated Reusi Serming Prai's current status as to which planes of existence he will go after this. This humble article story is also dedicated to Luang Pu Kalong, a Celestrial Alchemist monk and to Luang Phor Krut whom we knew today as the highly respected Reusi Serming Prai by worshipers all around.

Sadhu! Sadhu! Sadhu!
Only mindfulness awareness, firmly anchored in the present moment, leads directly to the truth. Never presuppose the truth. Don't speculate or theorize about meditation practice. And don't mistakenly appropriate the knowledge you gain from reading this exposition. Only clear and direct insight guided by mindfulness, investigated with wisdom, and pursued with diligence will penetrate the truth.

The Necromancy of Reusi Serming Prai is part of our story continuation on Luang Pu Kalong ‘Kieow Gaew’ life story. I cannot express enough thanks to Phattana Chaknam, Anvil, and Ling Ng for their generosity in knowledge sharing and recommendations to improve this story with all the relevant points. My gratitude also goes to my cousin William and to all those who have provided me with encouragement, read, and personal testimonials since the first story related to this 'Crystal Tooth' monk.
In this article, the storyline have been incorporated with some Dharma inspirations to help encourage ourselves to continue striving in our Samadhi or Vipassana practice as meditators to direct ourselves toward Magga, Phala and Nibbana. This story is dedicated to all praiseworthy sentient living beings in the Celestial Universe for supporting the Dharmas that has always been there ever since the beginningless past. Last and not least, I beg forgiveness of all those who have been with me over the course of the years and whose names I have failed to mention.
For a start, Ruesi Serming Prai is the mentor of Luang Pu Kalong since childbirth B.E.2461 until his passing in B.E.2552. Luang Pu Kalong’s Poo Suer (Tiger hermit) is not the same as the universal Ruesi Serming Prai even though both have tiger heads. In actual fact, Luang Pu Kalong’s mentor Pu Ser had transformed into a human form with a tiger head as a result of practicing the occult art of Serming Prai in his previous life more than 500 years ago as Luang Phor Krut during Ayuthaya’s era.

We have earlier explained the 4 different classes of Reusi. The remaining part here shall explain our understanding about the 8 sub-divisions on Reusi's characteristics that falls under one of the 4 classes. The respective sub-divisions based on Ruesi's achievement are;

Ruesi and Dhutanga Monk
Ruesi hermits practiced their way in caves and in various locations far away from the turbulence of society, and generally four or five kilometres or more from the nearest village, and deep in the hills where nobody goes. But one of most significant difference from a Bhikkhu is these Ruesi do not have the tradition of going Piṇḍapāta as the Bhikkhus do. Ruesi cook themselves and eat their meals alone.
